Stereotyping is a disgraceful part of today’s society that is seen much too frequently, and has far too influential a role in the lives of civilians across the globe.

Stereotypes promote a segregated, unprogressive society that does not coincide with the current standards for what is acceptable.

Research corroborates the notion of stereotyping to be not only discourteous and sophomoric but also psychologically impairing, and ordinarily restrictive in one being able to perform a given task to his or her full potential.

A recent study conducted by the University of Arizona concluded that a phenomenon coined as stereotype threat, is to blame for the delusions regarding certain demographic groups inferior performances on standardized testing; “Stereotype threat research suggests that such differences in performance could stem from the mere existence of social stereotypes rather than from differences between the group’s actual abilities” (Exploring).

Coincidently, studies deduced that when “any reminder of negative stereotypes are removed, these individuals will perform equally to the students not belonging to a negatively stereotyped group” (Exploring).

The fact that negative stereotypes can go beyond being malicious, and can legitimately have a pernicious effect on one’s psychological health is disconcerting, and serves as further proof that such demeaning misconceptions need to be abolished indefinitely.
