For centuries, there has been a stigma surrounding swearing and whether or not cursing is appropriate or even considered socially acceptable. This apprehension originates from children being taught from an early age that swearing is contemptible and highly frowned upon.

Many individuals in opposition to swearing argue that it corrupts the English language as it is abrasive and lazy while others assert that it demonstrates a lack of manners, intelligence, and character. Luckily, for anyone such as myself, who suffers from chronic potty-mouth, these views are nothing but a fallacy.

In fact, according to various scientific studies, people who frequently swear are statistically shown to be more honest and intelligent than those who do not. “Profanity is associated with less lying and deception at the individual level” (Wong) due to people viewing others who swear freely as “speaking impulsively and without a filter” (Wong).

Swearing is also an excellent coping mechanism, and honestly is just therapeutic as hell: “Therapy helps, but screaming and cursing is faster and cheaper” (Fern).

Profanity is only inappropriate when used gratuitously or in a derogatory manner aimed to target a certain individual or demographic group. Therefore, as long as you are respectful and know your boundaries, you are free to let loose and have fun with it, and swear to your heart’s content.
