Amidst great speculation, Apple recently came out with a statement regarding the ongoing scandal surrounding older generation iPhones being slowed down. For years, the company has been held under scrutiny due to the suggestive theme of its products seriously malfunctioning around the time of a new release.
In its statement, Apple confirmed that for some time it has been deliberately fixing “software updates to limit the performance of older iPhones” (Kottasová) leaving consumers worldwide outraged. Although Apple claims that slowing down outdated phones is merely done to preserve and prolong the phone’s battery life, many people have been left speculating: “Some suggesting that Apple could be using the tactic to encourage fans to buy new phones” (Kottasová).
This revelation has left many Apple users feeling deceived and has prompted many to switch over to alternative providers while others have decided to pursue legal action. Currently, Apple is facing 8 lawsuits, including one for almost one trillion dollars under the allegation “that the Tech giant defrauded iPhone users by not disclosing its actions sooner” (Howarth).
