Only those who have endured the struggle that is perfectionism understand the toll that it takes on one’s life. The refusal to accept any standard short of perfection is exhausting and makes any form of decision making, no matter how trivial and insignificant, immensely complicated.
No such thing as a “perfect answer” exists, so when faced with even the simplest of tasks or the most elementary of questions, those who suffer from perfectionism always find a way to make things far more arduous and taxing than they were ever meant to be.
Most people when given the freedom to choose what they would like to do for say, a project, would be ecstatic. However, for a perfectionist, this is likely one of the last things they would want to hear.
There comes a point where one can have too much freedom, and it becomes a burden rather than a gift. A point where “too many options leads to indecision” (Key) and the variety of choices are simply “so plentiful that it floods people and leaves them with heightened uncertainty” (Key).
